TikTok Login Issues May Only Be the Beginning: TikTok Sued by Justice Department

Many users are facing problems ranging from an unsuccessful TikTok login to a TikTok ban. Recently, TikTok also got sued by the Justice Department. Learn everything you need to know here.

Preface

Recently, news started going around that TikTok was being sued by the U.S. Department of Justice for allegedly violating a law that makes requesting consent from parents before collecting data from children under 13.

The U.S. alleges that TikTok has knowingly allowed users under 13 to use the platform without parental guidance.

What’s Happening?

According to Healthy Young Minds and other sources, almost 18% of TikTok’s user base in the US are teenage users. Some users – around 2% of them – are kids of 11 years of age. As such, the TikTok login platform and services related to TikTok are required to comply with laws that require the possession of consent from parents before obtaining data from children. Also, TikTok should delete user data (including children’s data, if any is applicable) upon the request of their parents. The U.S. lawsuit also alleges that the TikTok platform providing a TikTok login didn’t do that either.

According to WRTV and other sources, this issue goes a little deeper – in 2019, TikTok was already fined over $5 million dollars for Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act violations because TikTok hadn’t notified the parents of kids who were under 13 that it’s about to collect their data.

Sources like Reuters say that TikTok login isn’t the issue per se, but problems start from the TikTok login being permitted for children under 13 without parental permission. Some sources say that the Federal Trade Commission – the FTC – is aiming to penalize TikTok $50,000 per violation per day, though it is unclear whether such penalties will be applied.

At the same time, the U.S. is actively working to protect the privacy and safety for teenagers and children – recently, the U.S. Senate has passed a bill that aims to extend COPPA for people up to 17 years of age, which is a great thing too.

According to the company behind the TikTok login, many of the allegations put forth by the U.S. have already been dealt with. According to the people working on the platform, TikTok does remove suspected underage users and has features like privacy protection, screen time limits, and others. According to some, however, many users of TikTok use the TikTok login functionality that is available through platforms other than TikTok (the TikTok login is also available as a social media appliance) and those functionalities don’t come with any age verifications either, which could be a problem that needs to be addressed.

We don’t doubt that TikTok is taking all of the possible precautionary measures to protect the safety and security of its users, but at the same time, we hope that issues like the TikTok login for people under 13 will be addressed.

Summary

The recent U.S. allegations about TikTok and the TikTok login were mostly related to children under 13 and TikTok failing to ensure that appropriate parental permission is obtained before collecting their data. TikTok has already faced similar problems and got fined in 2019 – whatever the case, we do hope that the TikTok login improves and the TikTok platform continues to be the awesome platform users know and love.
