I've founded BreachDirectory after years of collecting data breaches.
I'm the original founder of BreachDirectory.
BreachDirectory wasn't the first name for this project – in its early days, this project was a small part of my custom-built forum.
Long story short, the forum I've built didn't survive, but it had a trick up its sleeve – it hosted a data breach search engine within itself . It hosted a data breach search engine that was built after a couple of years of me collecting data breaches to raise awareness for the public – not many people used it back then, but eventually, that collection has transformed into the website you see today.
What's up with multiple websites bearing the same name? Are they all a part of BreachDirectory.com?
No – domains claiming to be BreachDirectory but under a TLD other than that of .com plagiarize my work and impersonate the service. Attentive users may even notice that the Terms of Service of these websites is a copy-pasted version of excerpts of the ToS available on this website.
There have been numerous attempts to plagiarize my work and attribute it to other people.
In connection with the question above, some of you may be asking "but aren't there multiple websites titled BreachDirectory?" Yes, there are – these websites are a result of people plagiarizing my work. The original edition of BreachDirectory has always beared the .com TLD – some say that plagiarism is the highest form of flattery though...
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the purpose of BreachDirectory.com?
The primary purpose of BreachDirectory.com is to spread awareness about the breadth of data breaches by acting as a data breach directory, easily let people protect themselves online, and provide interested parties with access to the BreachDirectory API.
Where does the data in BreachDirectory.com come from?
The data in this website comes from a variety of different public sources on the web.
My requests are getting blocked by a WAF – why?
While building BreachDirectory, I've consciously embarked on a Web Application Firewall project in 2014 – that WAF project is in service protecting this website 24/7, and if your request got blocked, it's most likely because it contained something akin to a malicious payload (or it was a false positive – that happens too.)
Can I use the information provided in BreachDirectory, its search engine, API, or blog?
Yes. Anyone may use the information provided in BreachDirectory in any capacity given that BreachDirectory.com is given credit and a link back to the website.
